Windrush Day Celebrations
Get ready for an explosion of vibrant energy and soulful rhythms as the Cornwall and Devon Creative Collective, in collaboration with The Box Museum Gallery, presents a spectacular Windrush Day celebration on Sunday, 21 June 2026. Immerse yourself in the "Funded Caribbean Kitchen," where the food atrium transforms into a tropical oasis featuring a mouth-watering Specials Menu—including Bajan style Rice and Peas, Callaloo soup, and spiced rum cake—complemented by a voucher subsidy system to ensure everyone can join the feast. While you dine at tables adorned with themed decorations, challenge your friends to a game of dominoes or soak in the incredible live performances from Baraka and Louise Parker, who return to recreate the magical, high-energy atmosphere that captivated audiences last year.
The celebration spills out onto Tavistock Place for a high-octane "Carnival" experience that promises fun for the entire family with pan sounds and a live DJ spinning everything from Calypso and Soca to Mento and Ska. Children and adults alike can get creative with chalk art drop-in sessions, musical storytime, or hands-on workshops with Léonie to craft their very own carnival wands, feather cuffs, and headdresses. Inside the gallery, honor the lasting legacy of the Windrush generation through a stunning exhibition of hand-sewn clothing by Aralda Beckford—who famously arrived in Plymouth on the SS Auriga in 1954—alongside the world-renowned textile designs of Althea McNish, whose bold work injected life and color into post-war British fashion.
