The Black Presence in Cornwall (1680-1830s)
Digital Map & Poem

We are happy to launch our latest interactive Digital Map

showing the lives of people from the African Diaspora in Cornwall.

This project was first exhibited at the 'Cornwall's Untold Stories: Black Presence and Legacy' event organised by Black Voices Cornwall

on 30 October 2025.

This project was inspired by Imtiaz Habib's research:

Black Lives in the English Archives, 1500-1677: Imprints of the Invisible  (2008)

If you have any suggestions for the map, we'd love to hear from you.

"To forget our past is to walk blindly into the future"

Edmund Burke (c. 1729–1797).

With thanks to BVC, Imtiaz Habib, Kathleen Chater, Miranda KaufmannChloe Phillips, Kresnow Cornwall & all those interested in tracing and recording the legacy of Britain's often invisible black history.

If you would like Helen to come and give a talk on this subject, please send us an email.
